Resort, the opulent season when designers get to flex their muscles and give direction on what to pack, is afoot. This season immediately evokes the thought of the jet-setter enjoying her choice of luxury getaways. While, of course everyone is paying attention to the looks and trends of the clothing, every woman knows the most import accessory to consider for any vacay is her shoes.
However, in the Resort/Cruise 2011 shows exhibiting last week, it seems designers have taken the focus off of the shoe. In place, of the statement shoes of seasons past are basic sandals, classic heels, and utilitarian flats. The simplistic shoe designs work well and blend seamlessly into the background of the designers’ looks without a peep.
John Galliano’s Dior show was laced with feminine dresses that oozed the Parisian chic attitude of the sixties. As perfect companions the models wore dolled up mary jane variants. Bottega Veneta, in contrast, offered an array of stark flats that were clearly just there to serve their innate purpose of getting to and fro.![]()
Lagerfeld went the extra mile and featured many shoeless models strutting down streets that formed Chanel’s St Tropez runway. Consistent with the free spirited times of the 70s,
which the show channeled, models were clad in whimsically feminine garments that complimented their lack of footwear. It was once said, “Give a girl the right shoes and she can conquer the world.” Maybe just conquering a vacation while barefoot is enough.
